Educating Diverse Students

Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.
Will Durant

Diversity is simply defined as distinctive traits or characteristics. In this context, every child is diverse. In the context of education, diversity addresses digressions from the "norm" or "average." Cultural, ethnic, language, economic, gender, and even age can be factors in determining who is a diverse student. And, logically, diverse students demand diverse teaching strategies.

Working in a location so near the border of Mexico, I have often been exposed to students who are learning English as a second language. Cultural and socioeconomic factors tend to alienate students from the curriculum designed for English-speaking, middle-class children. Adapting curriculum, presentation, and assessment methods to accommodate diverse students is up to the teacher.

I have learned basic conversational Spanish to help in the transition to an English-based classroom. I modify presentation of material to utilize multi-intelligences, cooperative assignments, peer tutoring, and hands-on learning. Testing is often adapted to include oral interaction, presentations, or portfolio options. Exposing children to as much varied information as possible guarantees that interest will spark motivation to learn.

I have also had training in teaching children with learning or behavioral disorders. Innovative strategies to allow the learning of all children in a cooperative environment are essential. My attitude toward meeting the needs of diverse students is that anything and everything goes. There is no idea too radical to try, no success too small, no effort too much. I have seen great advances made by children who are allowed whatever they need to learn. I try not to put up any barrier but one--the safety of every child.

My perception of diversity is positive and proactive. I believe in encouraging individual growth and tolerance of differences. The unique characteristics of every student enhance the community of the classroom.
