Knowledge, a rude unprofitable mass,
The mere materials with which wisdom builds,
Till smoothed and squared and fitted to its place,
Does but encumber whom it seems to enrich.
Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much;
Wisdom is humble that he knows no more
William Cowper
I've worked in restaurants, offices, and schools. I've done manual labor and mental labor and found them both exciting.
I worked for 10 years as an Emergency Medical Technician, responding to calls in my area, 100 miles from the hospital. I treated patients and drove the ambulance (but not at the same time.) During that time, I was both a part-time volunteer and worked full time in Lordsburg, 40 miles away. I enjoyed the experience and learned much.
I didn't go back to college until I was in my 30's and experienced the trials and joys of being a nontraditional student. The years of driving 100 miles to school to complete a degree were enlightening and drastically widened my world.
I've headed committees, worked in groups, and gone it alone. There are few activities I haven't been involved with professionally. I've both maintained traditions and broken new ground. I've been a public speaker for my church, school, and countless organizations. I try to be an encourager and a positive voice in a negative world.
By accomplishing many things that require courage and commitment, I have gained confidence to attempt to grow.There are many things that I haven't done yet, but I'm looking forward to trying and succeeding. The lessons I've learned through experience serve me well as I struggle to improve and expand.
