GIVEN THE TARGETED UNDERSTANDINGS,
OTHER UNIT GOALS, AND THE ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
IDENTIFIED, WHAT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ARE NEEDED?
Students will need to know:
- Key terms: area, length, width, dimensions, surface, formula
- The formula for area
- Mathematical measurment devices and units
- What a repeating pattern is
Students will need to be able to...
- Use mathematical tools (tape measure, yardstick, calculator,
manipulatives)
- Use problem-solving and critical thinking skills to complete
a task.
- Take and manipulate pictures with a digital camera
- Use PowerPoint to create slides
- Use Inspiration or Word to create graphic organizers
- Work cooperatively with group members
- Follow directions
- Work within time constraints
What teaching and learning experiences will equip students to demonstrate
the targeted understanding?
- Discuss area (introductory activities in lesson)
- Review the formula to find area
- Introduce essential questions, key terms, format of unit (station
rotation), and expectations and assessment (rubric)
- Divide class into cooperative groups
- Discuss or review procedures for handling equipment, station
and group rules, and time limits
- Have students work through stations to solve the problems
in each
- Give feedback on process or product while students work
- Conclude unit with presentation time (students
go over results and show products)
- Conduct follow-up extension
activities to broaden knowledge and assess understanding.
